The dream of a house with history drew Katrine and Johannes to Solhjem School. Together, they bought an old village school from 1918, which they are renovating with care. When it came time to replace the roof, Katrine and Johannes wanted to connect back to Solhjem’s original history, and here the choice of roof tiles was crucial to give the house its original classic appearance.
We visited Katrine and Johannes in the midst of renovating the 373 square meter residence, just after their new roof had been installed. Here there is rural idyll for all the money, lemon moon cake on the coffee table, and building materials in the front yard. Katrine and Johannes have taken a well-deserved break from the renovation and provide insights into their thoughts about the roof, and how they with respect for the house’s original appearance have made some deliberate choices to honor the house's history.
"With the roof, it just had to work"
Katrine and Johannes do the work themselves wherever they can. But with the roof, they did not want to take any chances and teamed up with a skilled carpenter who has installed the tile-red roof on the old school building.
Before Katrine and Johannes got that far, there were initially some aesthetic considerations about the roof. The couple's idea was to take Solhjem School back to its original style. It was precisely this thought that inspired Katrine and Johannes to choose an IBF Wing roof tile in tile-red color.
"We also looked at the mocha-colored roof tile, which I especially loved," says Katrine. But with some of the old roof tiles in hand, Johannes and Katrine decided to go with the tile-red roof tile and a color that evokes associations with a historically classic construction.
Katrine says: "The roof has regained its old, classic look, and the color is so beautiful. It's nice to know we did something right with the roof."
Katrine and Johannes are in the midst of the renovation when we visit them shortly after the tile-red roof tiles have been installed.
