Blog Post by Maria Lundvald: Small Tasks in September
As September rolls in, the gardens slowly change color. The golden tones emerge, and it's truly beautiful.
Right now, we're enjoying the last hours of late summer on our terrace. Even though it's a bit chilly, one can simply wear a sweater and throw a blanket over their legs, right? That's what we do, anyway, as there are still many great experiences to be had in our garden.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the tasks that need doing outside right now. But it's so important not to stress. Especially if you're new to gardening, it can seem quite daunting. I vividly remember when I was young and stood in my first courtyard garden – I had no idea where to start or finish! Fortunately, that has changed, and everyone starts somewhere.
So make it easy for yourself:
Harvest everything edible right now
We're currently harvesting grapes, tomatoes, and fresh herbs like never before, and collecting eggs.Prepare the terrace for the coming fall
Sweep the terrace thoroughly and plant your pots with heather, ornamental cabbage, and winter asters.Make a plan
Sit down with a cup of coffee and think about what worked this season. Is there anything you should change?Plant spring bulbs
There are so many lovely bulbs and you will definitely feel a bit happier when fresh flowers sprout from the brown earth in spring.Paint fences, posts, and wooden greenhouses now
It's nearly the last call to paint outdoors – so decide if you need to get it done this year.Weed – get rid of it
If there's anything that spreads, it's weeds. So remove as much as you can manage.Say "oh well"
There's so much we want to achieve, so remember to say "oh well" when you can't do it all.Remember, the garden isn't going anywhere and it can handle a lot. It will be fine by spring again if you don't manage to get it ready for autumn. The point is to have good times in the garden – to enjoy your garden. In fact, that's why we call our garden "The Garden of Enjoyment," because you should remember to enjoy the garden.
We are currently making a new garden plan, as we will be expanding our terrace in the coming months. I've sat down myself and thought about what works and what new needs we have today. It's healthy to shake things up and adapt your garden to your new needs.
Even healthier, perhaps, is to say – "OH WELL."
Blogger Maria Lundvald shares about herself, "I am a 45-year-old garden enthusiast who plays in my garden, loves my many garden rooms, has 5 chickens, lots of perennials, roses, a 29 m² large orangery, a garden pond with fish, and all this takes place on an ordinary residential street."
