How to Operate and Maintain Permeable Pavements
IBF permeable pavements are maintained like other paving stone surfaces, but there are some differences due to the continuous need to prevent clogging of the joints.
Joint Refilling
The joints must always be filled with the correct jointing material. Partially empty joints collect significantly more dirt and weed seeds, which reduce the infiltration capacity. Moreover, it is important for the stability of the stones.
Cleaning of joints
To ensure the permeability of the pavement throughout its lifespan, systematic cleaning of the joints must be performed. Typically, passing over with a suitable sweeping/suction machine is sufficient. Depending on the specific location and its surroundings, this should be done once a year or less frequently.
If the infiltration capacity of the joints has been significantly reduced, it may be necessary to use a specialized vehicle that both flushes and suctions. Always check the joints for refilling afterward.
Ice Control
For environmental reasons, the use of road salt should be avoided. Ice control is best performed by gritting with DrænAf®, which is also used for joint filling. Ordinary gravel should not be used as it will clog the joints.
Snow should be swept away with a brush. Avoid using a scraper/shovel as they can damage the surface of certain types of stones.
Maintenance Agreement via NCC
It is also possible to set up a regular maintenance agreement through NCC to keep the area maintained and the collected material disposed of.
